Thanksgiving Alternatives

Thanksgiving Alternatives

If you’re ready to shake things up this holiday season and celebrate Thanksgiving in a non-traditional way, check out some of these fun ideas below. You’ll still get that quality family time (and probably a good meal, too), but your day won’t be centered around eating a meal and falling asleep watching football afterwards.

• Do a 5K on Thanksgiving morning. All across the country there are “Turkey Trots” or other Thanksgiving-themed races on the fourth Thursday in November. Its becoming a tradition in some households, but if you’ve never attempted one, now is a great time to try! Think you can’t run 3.1 miles? Then walk it! Or, sign up for the family 1-mile fun run/walk where strollers and pets are welcome, too. The Woodlands YMCA hosts a race – visit http://runthruthewoods.org/ for more information and to register.

• Go out for dinner. Not up for slaving away in the kitchen for 6 hours for a 30 minute meal? Hit up a local favorite restaurant instead. You’ll have much less stress and, bonus, no dishes to clean! Choose something exotic, like Vietnamese food, Ethiopian food, or sushi to buck tradition even more. Just call ahead to make sure they’re open on Thanksgiving and possibly make a reservation.

• Serve steak. Forget the turkey, mix it up with grilled steaks this year. Steak goes great with traditional Thanksgiving side dishes like mashed potatoes and green bean casserole, so why not throw a couple on the grill this year instead? Get a good cut of filet or ribeye from the butcher and then try this marinade recipe from All Recipes: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/143809/best-steak-marinade-in-existence/

• Take a vacation. It is not too late to book that last-minute trip to a tropical island! You can find great last-minute deals on Southwest Airlines, Kayak, and other travel websites. Book a 4-day cruise out of Galveston (it’s only an hour drive from The Woodlands!) and spend Thanksgiving on a beach in the Bahamas. Who knows, this might become your family’s new tradition!

No matter how you choose to celebrate, have a wonderful holiday and remember to be thankful.
