With nicer weather just around the corner, now is the best time of year to get out and about in The Woodlands and Montgomery County, Texas. Here are some ideas for family fun outside coming up over the next few weekends.
• YMCA Dragon Boat Races – The annual tradition of Dragon Boat Races at North Shore Park in The Woodlands has been going on for eighteen years! This local event is based on the Chinese holiday observed annually for over 2,000 years that commemorates Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese patriotic poet. This year’s festival takes place September 22 – 25 and features a dodge ball competition, Sumo soccer, an obstacle course, and other family games in addition to the boat race.
• Color Run – On October 2, come out to the Legends Sports Complex to dash through a 5k course while all the colors of the rainbow cover you in a fun, unique race. By the end of this event, you’ll look like you just burst through a kaleidoscope! Music and dancing before, during, and after the race make this one fun for runners and spectators alike.
• Texas Renaissance Festival – Acclaimed as one of the nation’s largest and best Renaissance Festivals, the Texas RenFest in Plantersville is a must-do event for those of us living in the area. People from all around come out in full 16th Century costume, complete with play-acting in character of the period. There are jousting contests, strolling musicians, Shakespeare performances, fireworks, camel rides, wine tastings and a plethora of other activities to enjoy. Shop in the marketplace and dine on a turkey leg while wandering through this wonderland weekends October 8 through November 27.
• The Woodlands Children’s Festival – Taking place on November 12-13 at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, this annual event is full of fun for young kids. There will be live entertainment, arts and crafts stations, and fun “athletic” events for children to participate in and learn about art and being healthy in age-appropriate ways.
Fall is a great time of year in Texas, so get out and enjoy it!
